RESUMO:

This thesis aims to investigate the probability of an individual choosing to work in an unhealthy
sector given his observed and non-observed characteristics using the Discrete Choice Model.
The unhealthy economic sectors present the highest number of people who tested positive for
COVID-19 among all economic sectors, such as the Public Administration, Defense and Social
Security, Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles, Administrative Activities and
Complementary Services, Human Health and Social Services, and Education. The novel
coronavirus started spreading in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has influenced
everyone. Even after authorities did not realize how dangerous the spread could be, the world
faced one of the worst pandemics in human history. The main idea is to predict the probability
of an individual choosing to work in an unhealthy sector conditional on salary and commuting
distance, and other individual characteristics using combined data through individual CPF
(Individual Taxpayer Registry) from the Pernambuco State Health Department and RAIS
(Annual List of Social). The State of Pernambuco was one of the states with the most cases in
Brazil, fifth in the nation, with 25,760 cases as of May 24, 2020. The model estimated for
Recife, Pernambuco, presented a higher chance for individuals working in unhealthy economic
sectors to catch COVID-19. Older individuals and men presented a higher chance of contracting
the virus, also individuals who worked more hours and who lived farther away from work. In
the Human Health and Social Services, an unhealthy sector, women are more likely to contract
the virus, especially older women, due to the high number of women working in this sector.
The first section is the introduction, the second section presents the literature review, the third
section displays the methodology, the fourth section presents the results and discussion, and the
fifth section concludes the thesis. Hopefully, new public policies will be created by the present
work, and new research will be needed considering the informal sector.
