SUMMARY:

We present here the results of the Master's research developed in the Education and Diversity
Line - Education Center - of the Graduate Program in Education at the Federal University of
Pernambuco – Campus Agreste. We trace as a research question: how the cangaço is being
approached and thematized in the history textbooks of secondary and elementary education in
the state of Pernambuco, specifically in the city of Serra Talhada? And how do teachers work
the cangaço theme in school teaching from these textbooks? We are affiliated with the
Theoretical Approach to Decolonial Studies and History Seen from Below. We start from the
assumption that school books are didactic tools for the transmission of knowledge and that the
contents inserted in them can lead the subjects of learning to a unique and universal
understanding of historical narratives, privileging a dominant social class. Therefore, the
general objective of this research is to discuss the cangaço social phenomenon from the
perspective of the subaltern and coloniality, adding this social phenomenon to the teaching
system introduced in textbooks and pedagogically transmitted by teachers in educational
institutions. The research showed that the didactic works presented elements of science and Eurocentric culture in the construction of historical narratives. Elements such as one- sidedness, universalization, naturalization and denial of historical narratives on the cangaço theme led to all the knowledge that the didactic works presented on the subject. Regarding the understanding and conduction of school works by teachers, it was evident that in their perception the textbook, despite being essential, becomes inconsistent for the teaching-learning of their students, requiring a deeper intervention by teachers, such as looking for and provide other research sources.
