PAGES: 196
BIG AREA: Ciências Humanas
AREA: Educação
SUMMARY:

This research sought to understand the principles and forms of translation of latent
Popular Education in the educational practices developed by the Centro de Educação Popular
Assunção (CEPA). The background, therefore, is a social organization arising from the
leadership initiative of Vila Padre Inácio, in the periphery of Caruaru-PE-Brasil, under the
liveliness of a group of consecrated women from the Congregation of the Little Sisters of
Assumption. We searched the theoretical benchmarks of Social Movements, Popular Education
and Latin American Popular Pedagogy, in dialogue with the Spirituality of the Congregation of
the Little Sisters of the Assumption, bequeathed by their founders to CEPA, for support to
understand the translations of Popular Education in the socio-educational practices of the
researched social organization. The main exponents and subsidiaries of these theoretical
references conversed, resulting in the production of knowledge that allowed a comprehensive
approach to the investigated reality. Paulo Freire (1996, 2018), Estevão Pernet (2005),
Antonieta Fage (2005) were the main interlocutors, assisted by Carlos Henrique Brandão (2013,
2016), Alder Júlio Calado (2008), Maria da Glória Gohn (2013), Danilo Streck (2010), Gustavo
Gutiérrez (1975), José Comblin (1985), Leonardo Boff (1987, 2015), Marie-Noëlle de la
Basserière (2005), among others (et al.). The qualitative methodology was employed based on
the Extended Case method, initially used by Boaventura de Sousa Santos (1983) and better

explained by Allene Lage (2009, 2013), having been adopted as data collection tools the semi-
structured interviews, participant observation and document analysis, whereas for data analysis

and organization, we made use of Content Analysis, with emphasis on the thematic axes, from
the standpoint of Laurence Bardin (1977). The results obtained, i.e., contextualized Education,
Political-Citizen Formation, Participatory Democratic Management and Female Protagonism
attest to both the convergence of educational practices carried out by CEPA based on the
principles of Freire's popular education and the founders' spirituality/as of the Congregation, as
well as the way that CEPA contextually translated Popular Education in the agrestino
(geographical area of Pernambuco State) ground of Pernambuco.
