SUMMARY:

This research has the general objective of understanding how non-binary people
perceive their recognition in their Graduate Programs (PPG) at UFRPE. The study
departs from post-structuralist assumptions, from the theory of performativity,
cisnormativity, recognizability and recognition. Our study was motivated by the
denunciation and problematization of binary intelligibility, supposedly natural, normal
and universal, which categorizes gender identities, in a fictitious way, exclusively into
men and women. This binary intelligibility does not recognize other gender identities,
such as non-binarity, as possibilities of the plurality of human existence. These types
of violence are faced by LGBTQIAP+ people on a daily basis in various institutions,
including education. Thus, the research focused on the non-binary bodies of graduate
students at UFRPE.For the development of this study, we used as methodological
resources: the technique of snowball to conduct the semi-structured interviews. These
data were understood under Content Analysis (CA). Thus, taking into account our
general objective, we found a scenario, in the Bolsonarist government, of budget cuts
for public universities, reduction of research scholarships for postgraduate students,
and hate speeches that encouraged violence, exclusion and the non-recognition with
non-binary people. In this context, non-binary people who sought postgraduate studies
as continuing education found a more hostile environment, however, it is worth

mentioning that physical violence was not mentioned on that campus. However, non-
binary people have noticed some gains in recognition with LGBTQIAP+ people

compared to past decades. Non-binary people mentioned that even if there was a
greater recognition of them at the university, more educational public policies for
democratization and their permanence in that environment are needed. They also
mentioned that there was a need for forms that use the filling options for non-binary
people in gender categorizations; more research groups and extension projects with
the non-binary theme; just as it is necessary to use pronouns that are neutral or
appropriate to the identities of non-binary students.
