SUMMARY:

Starting from the music used during the establishment of Protestantism in Brazil and considering, in that first moment, the hymns brought by the missionaries, which are “sacralized” here as liturgical models of Protestant music, seek to understand, through this analysis, the relationship between Protestant faith from the insertion of Brazilian rhythms in the music of this religious segment as proposals for renewal in relation to traditional hymns. In this process, from the 1960s, some Brazilian rhythms such as Bossa Nova, Samba, Baião, among others, were assimilated as a possibility of religious expression. It will focus, however, on the work produced by Banda Sal da Terra, which seeks to understand the identity processes claimed by these musicians with regard to the use of forró as a catalytic vehicle and transmitter of Protestant religiosity in the Pernambuco hinterland. Such relationship, in some aspects, seems conflicting if we consider that forró and its subgenres, as well as the legacy left by Luiz Gonzaga and his partners, are closely linked to dance, an element ignored in the band's proposal, but at the same time stimulated by the rhythmic dance characteristics of forró and its subgenres. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, in the texts of the songs produced by the band, in non-participatory observations in loco in the group's presentations in churches and evangelical events, and in referenced readings within the theme. Some theories related to cultural studies that deal with the decentering of subjects and social institutions in modernity (HALL, 2006) and studies on sociocultural processes of hybridization (CANCLINI, 2001) served as the basis for the analyses; as well as studies in the area of sociology that discuss the processes of construction of identity and memory as a social phenomenon (POLLAK, 1992), Halbwachs (1990) were also used. As a result of the rapprochement between faith and forró, the individual seeks new meanings from his previous identity to the conversion to Protestantism, seeking to adapt it to the new faith with his “old” cultural experience.
