SUMMARY:

This dissertation deals with the functioning and function of the itinerant frevo orchestras that were based in Pátio de São Pedro, using it as a meeting point, among other things, in the time frame from 1990 to 2020. Carnival, constitutes a relevant space for the conductors and musicians of these groups that acted and act in the carnival of the city of Recife. Such orchestras are responsible for a large portion of the arrastões or carnival parades that take place in the streets and all this sound and artistic context was contemplated, with the general objective being to understand the role of the itinerant street frevo orchestras of the Pátio de São Pedro, in the period carnival from Recife. Historical data on frevo and on Pátio de São Pedro are presented, but the core of the text deals with itinerant frevo orchestras in general, where the hierarchy within and between these orchestras is presented, in view of the emergence of frevo orchestras of theater. Based on these contents, an ethnomusicological reflection is made on contemporary itinerant orchestras and the importance of Pátio de São Pedro for Recife’s carnival, also prioritizing the sound construction resulting from these orchestras. In general, the dissertation combines a historical bias with reflections in the light of ethnomusicological and social concepts. The research was carried out qualitatively, and partly in an ethnographic way, as in a type of self-ethnography, since my experiences in itinerant orchestras in Pátio de São Pedro were also reported in the testimonials of the musical experience, and also through directed documentary research, considering trips to museums and public archives.
