SUMMARY:

The present work seeks to present and discuss the process of construction of liturgical music in the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife between the 1960s and 1970s. Since the proposed time frame is already inserted in the post-conciliar reality, we seek to understand on what parameters the interpretation took place. and application of conciliar measures, which altered the dialogue between church and society, and influenced the composition of music for the Catholic liturgy. Looking at the Brazilian Northeast, we see the search for the creation of a liturgical music from the Northeast, influenced by the proposal of adaptation to the nature and culture of the peoples, as brought by the Conciliar Constitution Sacrossanctum Concilium, and applied by the “inovadores” and “conservadores” composers, despite the particularities with which each one, influenced by the sociocultural flows of the church and society, applied these new guidelines to their work. Based on a bibliographic and documental review, we seek to analyze the relationship between liturgical music and society as a place of conflict; recognize and contextualize the influencing flows of liturgical music in the proposed time frame; to discuss, based on the production and perception of the time, the construction of “northeastern” liturgical music; in the light of the main composers - history and production, seek musical and textual elements that contribute to the discussion of the proposed theme. All these aspects seek to shed light on the relationship between music, culture and society, contributing to the deepening of the discussions of the “Ethnomusicology of Christianity” from the Brazilian context.
