SUMMARY:

This work aims to understand the success reference in the performance of the North American conductor and missionary Fred Spann in the collective memory of the Baptist Theological Seminary of Northern Brazil and its Symphonic Choir. Yet, what historical- political-social aspects mark his passage through the institution, contributing to his establishment and how these brands still affect his successors, even over 25 years after his absence, by giving him an almost mythical power. In an ethnographic approach, participant observation acted combining semi-structured interviews and narratives, in order to perceive hidden data in the speeches from the interviewees’ free expression and their memories, delimiting the analysis to the conductor’s acting period in the Seminar by the end of the 1980’s, when he was preparing his successor. Written and recorded files, published by the institution and provided by the author, were also analyzed, so they helped us reflect on the construction of a collective and institutional identity. The chapters discuss the establishment of Protestant missionaries from the South of the United States in Brazil, their anti-Catholic discourse with a progressive but moralistic argument, and the race for political influence, which was spread through the development of the Baptist denomination in the country. The visibility strategies through music and the media, just as the highlight on the authority represented by the figures of the pastor, conductor and foreign white man, implied in Fred the perfect image of the myth that needed to be eternalized. Our field of study faces an intertwining of scenarios and facets already well discussed by theorists of sociology and philosophy, which are taken up in a dialogue with Diana Taylor's performance studies. Her vision directed towards Latin America helps us to structure scripts that historically reiterate the maintenance of power, and are found in the speeches about our object, as an integral part of a complex of intentions.
