SUMMARY:

The main objetive of this study is to characterize the process of creating the 7-string guitar in the live recording of the CD Paulo Moura e Os Batutas, at Teatro Carlos Gomes in Rio de Janeiro in August 1996. To achieve this purpose, the research takes, as a reference object, the description of the performance performed on this instrument in three selected tracks and the analysis of the harmony and characteristic phrasing that frames the genres of the chosen pieces. The research is qualitative with an interpretive nature, since the real data were collected inductively, without the use of statistical tools, for subsequent analysis, with the researcher being the active agent in the investigation and at the same time the investigated agent. To achieve its objective, the research takes as theoretical references PELLEGRINI (2005) and TABORDA (1995), among other publications. The context surrounding the recording of the album in focus plays a determining role in the result obtained and is described so that an analysis could be made of the musical and psychological aspects that permeated the main event of the research. To this end, a comparative-deductive analysis was carried out, considering other recordings, when possible and when the importance of other records justified such a procedure. The results obtained consider these aspects and highlight that the conclusions represent a personal view of the researcher when writing the work, taking into account that music is something that goes beyond the experience with sound and its characteristics of timbre, pitch, duration and intensity. It results from an interactive action between instrumentalists, repertoire, audience and context of the performance. In each work focused on, one element stood out. In the “Rosa” waltz, the reharmonizations stood out; in the choro “Ingênuo”, innovations in phrasing; and in the samba “Pelo Telephone”, greater rhythmic possibilities.
