SUMMARY:

With the spread of access to the web, automated library catalogues have become available and accessible online, expanding search possibilities and giving information subjects more autonomy to find the information they need. However, to be effective in a digital environment, these catalogues need to be easy to use and have good information findability. In this context, the aim of this research was to analyse the online public access catalogues of Brazilian public university libraries in terms of the ways in which they promote the findability of information. This was a descriptive, qualitative study which sought to investigate the integrated library systems and catalogues used by the sample of 99 state and federal public higher education institutions. Based on this survey, a comparative study was carried out between catalogues and discovery interfaces, with the aim of obtaining an overview of the ways in which they promote the findability of information. To do this, the systematic observation technique was used, with the Information Findability Checklist by Vechiato, Oliveira and Vidotti (2016) as the evaluation tool. The results showed that the online public access catalogues used by the institutions can be classified into three categories of information findability: good, fair and poor. The online catalogues native to the SophiA and Pergamum systems were rated as good in terms of findability. The online catalogues managed by the Aleph and Siabi software were classified as having fair information findability and the online catalogues managed by SIGAA and Gnuteca obtained a poor result in terms of promoting findability. Among the discovery interfaces, all showed good results and their findability was classified as good. It was concluded that, in terms of promoting the findability of information, the online catalogues of Brazilian public university libraries need to implement ways and functionalities to promote greater participation by individuals in these environments, reducing the passive nature of obtaining information and adapting to the new information behaviours they demand. It was found that it is important to implement improvements in usability, accessibility and responsiveness, as well as promoting greater integration of catalogues with the institution's information and technological ecology.
