SUMMARY:

Throughout the last three decades, the importance of digital interactions on the internet is gradually evolving in the everyday life of current societies. Among all fields of language usage in the daily digital world, online electronic games are in the spotlight, especially in the life of younger generations. Because of a particular interest in linguistic uses performed in conflict/hostility situations among online digital users, this work aims to describe and analyze the functioning of interactions among multiple players through online video games, drawing upon (im)politeness studies. From that emphasis, we had, as research objective, to identify in online video game matches how the participants elaborate collective team strategies through politeness and impoliteness mechanisms, particularly in contexts of potentially conflicting situations. We used a qualitative-interpretative methodology, supported by theoretical-epistemological principles of Ethnomethodology, Conversation Analysis and Interactional Sociolinguistics. Through recording audio and video (of in-game screen), we collected and analyzed three matches of two different online video games, that is, six matches in total. The two selected video games, League of Legends (LoL) and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO), were chosen because we considered these two, at this research, as the two more representative online competitive team video games, which enabled this work to diversify the data. The data analyses thus indicate that the specific roles performed by each player determine specific strategies of politeness and impoliteness, which usage (or not) are legitimized and/or ratified by the participants, depending on the adequate compliance and fulfillment of these roles. These roles, functions and strategies are more sharply required/expected in stereotypical moments of “relational tension”, at match phases that are regularly categorized by players as more decisive, crucial, dangerous, delicate etc. By tensioning functions and roles in potentially conflicting situations, interactants were compelled to elaborate interactional strategies for the maintenance of interpersonal harmony.
