Atlas and axis are the first two cervical vertebrae that, in association with the basioccipital, carry out the movement of the head, being important points of insertion of muscles and tendons. Amphisbaenia is a group of fossorial Squamata known to present four patterns of head shapes related to different excavation methods, but little is known about the complex atlas-axis and the evolution of this structure. In this study we propose a detailed description of the atlas-axis complex for 15 species of the six recognized families of Amphisbaenia and present an evaluation of the evolutionary scenario of selected characters related to this structure in a recent phylogeny for Amphisbaenia. Our results indicate that the basic pattern of the atlas-axis complex is more related to head shapes than to the monophyletic groups recovered in the recent phylogeny, reinforcing the hypothesis of remarkable morphological convergences in the evolutionary history of Amphisabenia. On the other hand, some of the characters may represent putative synapomorphies or autapormorphies for some clades.
