RESUMO:

The aim of this study was to investigate reproductive and bionomic aspects of Peckia (Peckia) chrysostoma (Pc) in order to provide ecological and medicolegal data. Pc larvae were collected and reared under controlled laboratory conditions (temperature: 25 ± 2°C, RH: 60% ± 10% and photoperiod: 12:12h) and four analyses were carried out: a) development of eggs and larvae internally; b) posture behavior; c) immature development; and d) longevity and fertility. Females showed ovaries with visible eggs and developed larvae between 8-10 days. This study presents, for the first time, show evidence of facultative oviparity behavior in Pc, with egg laying observed, which is different from what is expected for Sarcophagidae species that are known for their viviparous behavior. However, larval hatching was not observed. We evaluated the average developmental time for each larval stage and observed significant and direct proportional increases in weight and size over time and during larval stage changes. The longevity of males and females did not differ statistically, and female fertility evaluation revealed that the number of deposited larvae is inversely proportional to the female age, with a peak in larval laying occurring between the 3rd and 5th week, with records up to the 11th week and egg laying up to the 9th week of life. This study clarifies some little-known behavioral aspects of Pc, such as facultative oviparity behavior under stressful laboratory conditions and the high capacity of egg laying throughout the life of females, providing data for future studies using this species as a model for Sarcophagidae.
