Consumption of seafood is important for a healthy diet since it is a source of proteins of high biological value, although fish consumption is a potential source of exposure to toxic man-made chemicals such as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Fishes have been used for both monitoring pollution and assessing seafood safety for purposes of human consumption. King mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) is an important commercial species for artisanal fisheries in northeastern Brazil. Eleven individuals were purchased from fish markets of Salvador between October, 2015 and January, 2016. Organochlorine analysis was performed on the muscle and liver of each individual and the estimated daily intake (EDI) of contaminants was calculated. Average concentration of PCBs in muscle was 59.9 ng g-1 dry weight (dw), ranging from 4.40 to 121 ng g-1 dw. In liver, mean PCB concentration was 100 ng g-1 dw (range: 21.2 to 299 ng g-1 dw). A total of 69 congeners were detected above the limits of quantification (LQ) in biological tissues. Major congeners found were PCBs 153, 138/160, 170/190 and 180. DDTs were detected in muscle ranging from not detected (nd) to 10.2 ng g-1 dw (average: 5.31 ng g-1 dw). In liver, DDTs ranged from 6.04 to 75.0 ng g-1 dw (average: 20.9 ng g-1 dw). Metabolite p,p'-DDE was the most prevalent compound, suggesting ancient DDT input. Chlordanes (CHLs) were detected only in muscle sample from two king mackerel individuals at concentrations of 0.33 and 0.42 ng g-1 dw while HCHs and mirex were not detected in any sample. According to seafood safety guidelines, king mackerel commercialized in Salvador markets does not pose a threat for humans upon its consumption.
