SUMMARY:

This research investigates how mathematics undergraduates appropriate symbolic artefacts, such as semiotic representation systems, to solve piecewise functions activities through treatments and conversions in remote teaching. Our theoretical framework comprises the Theory of Registers of Semiotic Representation (TRRS) and the Instrumental Approach (AI). This research has as its methodological contribution the Online instrumental orchestration model (OI Online), used to plan the experiment sessions. In the current context of the pandemic, all research activities were carried out online through synchronous remote meetings. The methodology consisted of analyzing written records of the undergraduates, both by hand and in the shared board, and recording the sessions. We carried out two experiments: a preliminary study and the main one; we used videography with a microgenetic technic to analyze the data for both studies. In this analysis, we developed an index of events that involved treatments and conversions between registers of semiotic representation of functions, identified during the resolution of situations performed by the undergraduates. The results revealed adaptations requirements, both on the situation statement and the questions proposed in it, to be better understood by the participants and optimize the execution time.
