TITLE:

This master thesis analyzes the teaching approach of volume and capacity greatnesses on
textbook collections from the 1st to 6th year of elementary school. Two textbook collections'
were used in addition to official curriculum guidance documents, and textbook guides from the
Programa Nacional do Livro Didático for the years 2017 and 2019 (BRASIL, 2016, 2018) as
reference. The analysis were based on the perspective of Yves Chevallard's (1998)
Anthropological Theory of Didactics and on the adaptation of the area as greatness approach
for the volume, provenient of the didactic hypothesis formulated by Régine Douady and MarieJeanne Perrin-Glorian (1989) and dimensionality concept of volume and capacity. The analysis
categories were established and a praxeological modeling of the chapters and sections on
capacity and volume was done. As a result, it was noted that the measurement tasks are the
marjority, followed by the tasks of solving basic operations and problem solving. The cases
involving comparison of volumes (or capacities) and the production of solids are rare or even
non-existent in some books analyzed. It was observed ambiguities on the treatment of volume
and capacity concepts, approaching capacity as volume and volume as capacity countless times,
which can harm the student learning process. The relations between mass, volume and capacity
are rarely addressed. Many tasks in the analyzed books relate these greatnesses to other areas
of knowledge and to their daily uses. There was also an evolution in the types of tasks proposed,
in the associated techniques and in the increasing complexity in relationships with other
greatnesses. The one-dimensional and three-dimensional aspects of the greatnesses were
highlighted in the analysis and it was noticed that the volume and capacity in its onedimensional form was treated in the first books while the three-dimensional form was left to
the later ones.
