SUMMARY:

The present study aimed to investigate Combinatorics, Probability and their
articulations in the prescribed and presented Middle School curriculum, aspiring
the construction of a proposal that supports the teaching of both areas. The
research was structured in three studies that involved, in the light of the different
theoretical frameworks adopted: 1) the analysis of official national documents
and those of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, to identify if and how the work
with the investigated areas of Mathematics and their articulations are
prescribed; 2) the analysis of Mathematics textbook collections aimed at the
schooling stage in question to analyse how the work with these areas of
Mathematics is presented to the teacher in this curriculum material, in addition
to whether and how articulations between them appear; and 3) the construction
of a material addressed to teachers, which is a product of the thesis that
consists of general guidelines and a set of articulated problems, aiming the
development of combinatorial and probabilistic reasoning of students in the
Middle School. Studies 1 and 2 pointed out that Combinatorics has occupied
less space than Probability in both the prescribed and the presented curriculum.
Regarding the two areas, gaps were identified when it comes about the work
with distinct problems that allow a broad understanding of the concepts
involved, as well as the appropriation and use of different symbolic
representations that are also suited to the level of schooling and difficulty of the
problems. It was noticed that the analysed curriculum presents possibilities of
articulation based on common representations and also on unique random
contexts that explore combinatorial and probabilistic situations, although
sometimes unintentionally. In this sense, in Study 3 is proposed a set of
problems composed of eight sections in order to deepen the articulation
between Combinatorics and Probability based on the work with different types
of problems defended by the theoretical contributions adopted, also providing
guidance to the teacher in order to explore the importance of the development
of the reasonings in question. In this way, research can contribute both to the
field of studies in Mathematics Education, and directly to the teaching of
Combinatorics and Probability (valuing the relations and possible articulations
between these areas of Mathematics) in Basic Education, offering possibilities
for teachers to enrich their practice and also defending that from the first years
of schooling and later on, students are able to start and continue the
development of their combinatorial and probabilistic reasonings.
