SUMMARY:

There are many difficulties faced by Mathematics teachers and students. One of these difficulties is the fact that students do not want to learn Mathematics. In contrast to this, there is Cocal dos Alves - PI which is a city far from Teresina which is the state capital and with an estimated population of 6,000 whose students are succeeding in the Brazilian Public Schools Mathematics Olympiad ( OBMEP) which is a national project, created in 2005 and carried out annually. One could imagine that the students in that municipality are just reproducing some knowledge to succeed in this Olympics. However, you can see that not only do they want to participate in OBMEP, they also want to learn Mathematics and are really standing out at OBMEP. In this sense, the following question arises: what are the reasons that favor OBMEP medal-winning students in Cocal dos Alves to want to learn Mathematics? Thus, the research sought to analyze, from the historical-cultural theory, the reasons that arouse the desire of medal-winning students of the OBMEP Cocal dos Alves to learn Mathematics. For this, we tried to identify the needs that expressed the interest and/or aspirations of these students, as well as to analyze the difficulties faced by them during Mathematics classes and in preparing for the OBMEP. which made it possible for these students to become aware of wanting to learn Mathematics, in addition to analyzing the relationships between medalist students' backgrounds and foregrounds through the Critical Mathematics Education Theory. As a methodological approach, qualitative research was used. Among the modalities of qualitative research, the case study was chosen. The instrument used for data collection was the interview, which was conducted online with students through the WhatsApp application and with teachers through Google Meet. For the treatment and analysis of the data collected, content analysis was used, more specifically, thematic analysis. The analysis indicated that their liking for Mathematics was important for them to want to learn Mathematics, but the role of teachers, families, school management and the community proved to be more important. Furthermore, it can be identified that students want to learn Mathematics to use in their daily lives, but the main reason that awakens the students' desire is the possibility they found in Mathematics to cross the social and economic boundaries that limit them.
