SUMMARY:

The theoretical model of Statistical Literacy (LE) proposed by Iddo Gal emphasises crucial skills for active, critical and reflective citizen participation, especially in a society where statistics serve as support for decision-making based on data, which are shared by different forms of representation. Graphs have a fundamental role in the synthesis, organization and presentation of statistical data, exemplified by the boxplot, which incorporates five measures of descriptive statistics, favouring exploratory data analysis. This master's research project aims to analyse how the elements of Statistical Literacy can be mobilized by Mathematics undergraduates in the interpretation and construction of the boxplot graph. The methodology, of a qualitative and quantitative nature, will be developed with mathematics graduates who are studying the 5th period, at a public university in the Agreste region of Pernambuco. They will answer a questionnaire made up of open and closed questions and will participate in four training meetings to explore boxplot interpretation and construction activities developed within the scope of the PPDAC investigative cycle. The results of the Systematic Literature Review (RSL) highlighted the association of the graph in teaching specific statistical content such as variability, measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion. Furthermore, they highlighted the lack of studies on the boxplot aimed at the initial training of mathematics teachers, revealing the need for more research in this area. The work also showed that many students have difficulties in interpreting boxplots, such as the relationship between the length of the graph elements and the density of the data. It is expected that this study will contribute to Statistical Education and the development of statistical literacy among undergraduate students through the exploration of the boxplot.
