SUMMARY:

This research aimed to analyze, on both the mathematical and the cognitive point of view, the apprehensions related to the rational number in its part-whole meaning occurred from conversions, involving its fractional and percentage representations, performed by using two different ways: one by symbolic writings and the other by manipulative material. The study, whose foundation was Raymond Duval's Theory of Registers of Semiotic Representations – TRSR, adopted a methodological path that used some aspects of experimental research, such as the definition of the object of study (learning related to rational number), the selection of variables that could influence the object (use of two ways to convert a fractional representation into a percentage representation) and the way of controlling and observing the effects of this influence. The investigation took place in two classes of students in the 6th grade at a public school in the city of Recife. The results indicated that the conversion by manipulative material way was, from a cognitive point of view, more fruitful than the conversion by symbolic writings way, above all, with regard to the production of mental representations that helped participants in creating mathematically viable strategies for solving activities that involved the conversion in the opposite direction, the perception of the part in relation to the whole in the representation and the comparison between the magnitudes of represented parts.
