SUMMARY:

Since the inclusion of Statistics content in the Mathematics curriculum for primary school, several discussions about the teaching and learning of statistics have been highlighted in the main events dealing with Mathematics Education. The development of research focused on this topic has provided reflections on the importance of working on statistical concepts with children since Early Childhood Education. This study discusses the importance of children knowing how to classify data as one of the phases of the investigative cycle proposed by Guimarães and Gitirana (2013). To organize information in graphs and tables it is necessary to know how to classify, therefore, it is important that students know how to create and identify criteria for a classification and not just know ready-made classifications. From this perspective, this work aims to investigate the learning possibilities of children in Early Childhood Education in activities that involve classifying, valuing different skills and resources. To this end, a teaching-learning process about classification was developed involving different skills: identifying the criteria for a classification; identify the class based on a criterion/descriptor; create criteria to classify. Four classes of children aged 5 and 6 who attend Early Childhood Education in public schools in Recife and Jaboatão dos Guararapes participated in this research. The results show that it is possible to develop systematized and appropriate work for children in Early Childhood Education involving classifying, which is fundamental for them to be able to understand the physical and social world.
