SUMMARY:

The use of manipulable materials for teaching Statistics constitutes the possibility of access to data representations by blind students through tactile exploration. The general objective of this master's research is to analyze knowledge for teaching arithmetic mean to blind students mobilized with the aid of a manipulable material. In specific terms, it seeks to investigate the viability of a manipulable material for teaching arithmetic mean for blind students based on the experiences of Brailists and blind students. Also, to analyze mathematics teachers' knowledge for teaching arithmetic mean to blind students in inclusive classes; and to analyze teachers' knowledge in lesson planning for teaching of arithmetic mean to blind students using manipulative material. The qualitative methodology includes a description and analysis of the prepared material and the proposed methodological process, aiming at its validation based on a semi-structured interview with two Brailists, Maria and Josefa, and two blind students; and a semi-structured interview with two Mathematics teachers. Maria is visually impaired and works as a Braille transcriber in higher education. Josefa is visually impaired and works as a Braille transcriber in Basic Education. The interviewees emphasize the relevance of the material for teaching arithmetic mean and suggest adaptations in its elaboration to make it more effective. The interviewees emphasize the relevance of the material for teaching arithmetic mean and suggest adaptations in its elaboration to make it more effective. Maria points out the need to use more differentiated textures to help students in tactile explorations. In addition, she emphasizes that the audio description of the material is indispensable when using it with blind students, aiming to make it accessible to the understanding of its entirety through the transcription of the visual into the verbal. Josefa suggests using higher values in the proposed problems to ensure that students use the material; otherwise, they can reach the resolution by mental calculation. Both Brailists reinforce the importance of validation of the material by visually impaired students so that they can identify the limits and possibilities in tactile explorations. The manipulated material elaborated presents itself as a possible resource for tactile explorations of blind students on the concept of arithmetic mean. The research is in development and the text of the qualification presents the script of the semi-structured interviews with the students and the Mathematics teachers.
