SUMMARY:

The funk genre in Brazil has the first steps of its construction marked in Rio de Janeiro, but is currently reconfigured globally. In Belo Horizonte, expressions of this genre, which began in the 1990s, have developed particular electronic aesthetics and sounds over the last 10 years, claiming a territorial singularity from Minas Gerais, which finds symbolism in the catchphrase: “BH is who?”. I use this catchphrase, widely disseminated by funk production but also drained by various communicational
expressions in different contexts, as a vector that can point to other collectivities in the musical imaginary of the city, and I seek to investigate the specificities of this phonography among the rearrangements of funk in contexts outside Rio-Sao Paulo axis. I intend to analyze, in this way, the affirmation of a specific way (or several specific ways) of making funk in BH, also as a trigger for other understandings, transits and reconfigurations of musical categorizations in digital communication environments, permeated by identity disputes and markers of race, class, gender and locality.
