SUMMARY:

The present research aims to investigate the concepts of avatar and
avatarization nowadays, from the digital sphere, in the context of
Communication and Performance Studies. In this sense, we problematize
displacements and recontextualizations of human and virtual beings, within
the international pop mainstream, considering the processes of symbolic
synthesis of the being involved and seeking to understand to what extent they are a condition for performative acts. Initially, we carried out a historical retrospective of the term avatar, which goes back to the Hindu theological narrative, and of the social performance that we call avatarization. Deepening the discussion, we proceed to the study of the virtual singers Lil Miquela and Hatsune Miku, through theoretical-methodological tools providedby the studies of performance scripts and dramas, in the wake of the thoughts of Diana Taylor, Thiago Soares, Adriana Amaral and Beatriz Polivanov. Then, we began to outline an analytical possibility of communicational phenomena based on what we name the perspective of avatarization. As first results, we observed that the effort of expressive coherence appears as an important resource of corporate storytelling materialized in virtual singers, see the narrative of miscegenation in Lil Miquela, which is based on strategic processes of appropriation of Afro-diasporic aesthetics and bodies. Through Hatsune Miku, the research also reveals the decisive role of the logic of platformization in the music industry, as well as indicates the consolidation of new corporeities defined by digital in contemporary globalized culture.
