SUMMARY:

The professionalization of journalism, preached from the universities and asserted by the editorial policy of the media, translates into a series of standardizations, limiting the exercise of this activity by news workers, especially when considering that journalism exercises a mediating role in the debate of topics that are representative in the social environment. Then, how can a responsible journalistic production be guaranteed, taking into account the public's right to know, provided for in deontological codes? In this research, the proposal is to explore elements such as truth and reality and ideology in discourse to establish notions of what would be quality information and journalism, based on the analysis of the ethical principle founding mediation and from the perspective of confrontation between the theories of the mirror of reality and the social construction of reality. It is also proposed to give vent to some complaints about how objectivity, associated with professionalism, has given shelter to the suppression of important news or the propagation of news divorced from the public interest as a result of promiscuous relations between the controllers of the media and sectors of the elite. Finally, there is a reflection on initiatives in the field of ethics, including the institution of the ombudsman, more specifically in its impact on presidential elections in Brazil, seeking to assess whether and to what degree this figure of mediator between the public and the newspaper makes possible the interference of the audience in the coverage of the media vehicle.
