SUMMARY:

The present investigation analyzes the power relations (mainly political-economic) that shape journalism and, thus, influence the conditions in which journalists develop their work-profession. The binomial is used to punctuate the criticism to the hegemonic positivist conception, also central to the investigation, which tends to identify such subjects as 'professionals', impartial producers of information, an abstraction that contributes to turn invisible the conditions in which they produce and are (plural subjects), themselves, constituted. On the contrary, the study assumes that journalism, integrated in the media system, is a structured and structuring field, playing a central role in the social construction of reality, and therefore the possibilities of intervening in
it are quite different depending on the positions and relationships that different agents, internal and external to the field, occupy and establish among themselves. The study is based, mainly, on Pierre Bourdieu's Theory of Fields (1996, 2001, 2004), in the contributions of authors linked to the Political Economy of Communication (BOLAÑO, 2003, 2007; JAMBEIRO, 2002, 2009; LIMA, 2001, 2004, RAMOS, 2000) and in studies that have already identified high rates of job insecurity among journalists
(HELOANI, 2005; FIGARO, 2011; REIMBERG, 2015; LELO, 2019; NICOLETTI, 2019;). As main results: it was identified the increase of newsrooms’ downsizing processes, related to it, the juvenilization of those spaces and the intensification of the rhythm and volume of work; in general, although with significant differences depending on the companies and occupied positions, journalists work in a climate of job insecurity, earning low salaries and do not perceive possibilities for improvement in the near future; due to clientelistic relationships between business leaders of the vehicles and agents in the political and economic field, internal autonomy is relatively low; although most journalists have little familiarity with the topic ‘regulation’, an attitude that often is related to the evaluation of the important role that the mein media conglomerates took part in the development of the current sociopolitical crisis in the country.
