SUMMARY:

This essay searches to analyze the appearance of the gesture in the contemporary Brazilian cinema, its relationship with contemporary hybrid images and its political dimension, specifically in the documentaries Era o Hotel Cambridge (2016), by Eliane Caffé, Swinguerra (2019), by Bárbara Wagner and Benjamin de Burca, and Agora (2020), by Déa Feraz. For that, the research proposes to discuss the following questions: how does the gesture appear in these films? How does the expressive power relate to hybrid images, between the crossings of cinema, photography, theater and painting? What is the political dimension that the appearance of the gesture achieves in such films? According to the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, “At the end of the 19 th century, the western bourgeoisie had definitely lost its gestures.” (P.51, 2015). Such a sentence at first quite determining, after all is it possible we lost our gestures? It refers to the moment of advanced capitalism that had captured the most habitual gestures of the man, such as walking and speaking. These could not perform a complete movement without being interrupted by tics, mannerism and spasms. In a society that had lost its gestures, in cinema, there is a search for its reappropriation and recording of the loss, as Agamben (2015) attests. Analyze the three films that make up the corpus is also an attempt to attest to the survival of the gesture in contemporary cinema. To understand the nature of the gestures, its necessary to understand its expressive power, which in the text Por uma Política e uma Ontologia do Gesto (2018), the philosopher uses the fantasmata as an example. This refers to a moment in the dance, defended by the choreographer Domenico da Piacenza, in which there is a sudden pause between the movement that precedes and follows the choreography. In this sense, the issue of interruption of movement is essential for us to think about the nature of the gesture and we can find an update on the discussions on hybrid images through the “tableau vivant device”, where the tenuous relationship between movement and immobility is essential for such practice. In view of the above statements, this research seeks to expand the studies of communication on gesture, as well as to update the debate on hybrid images, as it believes that it will bring contributions especially in the field of aesthetics and politics. In addition to opening the way for new interpretations of contemporary images.
