SUMMARY:

The thesis investigates articulations between voices and gestures in media culture, crossing performances of cinema, music, and everyday life through the framing of dubbed acts, which help to gather clues about the audiovisual dynamics of performances, highlighting the exchanges between media products and everyday life. In this sense, an expanded notion of dubbing, which encompasses filmic practices, performative modes of lip-synching and listening performances, is taken as a motto for investigating performances, aiming to pressure the corporeality produced by audiovisual dynamics. At first, then, a theoretical discussion is developed on how dubbing tend to illuminate spaces “between” the performances, discussing relational processes of voices, gestural exchange schemes and subject production technologies. Then, studies on voices are discussed more specifically, aiming to understand how they project different conceptions about the body and its formation through media technologies. In a second moment, the thesis investigates how dubbing has been approached as a body building strategy in audiovisual media. To this end, we investigate the soprano Marni Nixon – aiming to reflect on the formation of the audiovisual body in cinematic practices and on its technologies of distinction. Next, the opera countertenor Jakub Jozef Orlinski is also framed, aiming to investigate the role of dubbing as an account of oneself in music videos, especially on digital platforms. Finally, the close links between audiovisual products and everyday performances are framed, consolidating gesture exchange schemes. This investigation begins with the study of the appearance of comedian Jefferson Schroeder, who articulates himself with the translation dubbings in Brazil, modulating different voices, and with the investigation of music listening practices, in which dubbing appears ephemerally as a technique of listening that articulates with some models of subjection. Each dubbed performance takes us to deal with theories about cinema, music, and subject productions, approaching discussions about body and voice, crossing scenic and everyday practices, often putting such theoretical axes under pressure. In each of the investigated cases voices are differently folded and produce the subjects with whom they are articulated, opening spaces in which technologies are visible and audible, in which gestures appear through their transits and in which voice does not belong to either subject – creating favourable moments to investigate each of these operations.
