SUMMARY:

The Covid-19 pandemic became the main topic of journalism agendas around the world in 2020-2021. In this research, we analyze the narrative approach adopted by independent journalism in Pernambuco in the news about the subject. The analysis focuses specifically on Marco Zero Conteudo portal, the main independent news collective in the state, seeking to unveil the frameworks adopted in the narratives of this vehicle, notable for its concern with themes from the peripheries, socially excluded
groups and social movements. Based on the methodology for analyzing journalistic narrative, proposed by Luiz Gonzaga Motta (2013), we seek to identify the existence of an intersubjective relationship between the narrators, the topics covered and the audience they target. Although they use rhetorical resources similar to those adopted by the mainstream media, independent journalism is based on the constructivist paradigm,
detaching itself from the shields of objectivity and impartiality under which traditional journalism seeks protection and exempt itself from involvement with the facts reported. The time frame of this research encompasses the first six months of the pandemic in Pernambuco, between march and september 2020, configured as the most critical of the “first wave”. We analyzed 94 reports published by the collective, which reveal the concern to contribute to an understanding of the pandemic, as well as the measures and actions adopted – or neglected – by public managers, scientists and other entities responsible for preventing and combating the health crisis, offering information collected together to official and alternative sectors, both in the field of scientific research and in communities and political backrooms. Our research sought theoretical
frameworks proposed by authors who work on journalistic narrative, the social construction of reality, democracy and the public sphere, such as Motta (2006; 2013; 2017), Habermas (1997; 2002; 2012), Schudson ( 2010), Traquina (2016), Correia (2005) and Castells (2000; 2013). We conclude with the proposition that independent webjournalism, as an alternative and democratic media, has much more to contribute to
the social construction of reality than the traditional press.
