News coverage of Shark incidentes in Pernambuco: Effects of meaning in the voices of experts

Shark attacks have been part of the lives of bathers and tourists who have frequented the beaches of the Metropolitan Region of Recife (Pernambuco, Brazil) for more than 30 years (1992-2024). The State has 77 victims of shark attacks, 22 fatal. The event of shark attacks exerts enormous media fascination. This dissertation aims to investigate journalistic coverage of shark incidents over the last three decades, through the analysis of the frames imposed on specialized voices in factual news about shark incidents. Methodologically, work on news analysis and interviews with specialized sources. Our corpus is the factual news about the incidents published by the newspapers Folha de S. Paulo and Jornal do Commercio, between 1992 and the present day. Using content analysis, we organize and categorize citations from specialized voices, bringing together fragmented and scattered information throughout the texts, identifying themes and sources. In a second step, we seek to analyze the discourses that permeate the experts";
speeches, discussing how information about the phenomenon may have influenced the construction of a new imaginary of the beach, while neglecting the debate on the environment and risk communication.
