SUMMARY:

A study on the masculinities present in the audiovisual production of the heavy metal scene in Belém-PA. It will start from the 10 video clips generated on YouTube, broadcast by Facebook, Instagram and produced by local bands, between 2015 and 2023, to analyze the scripts of performed masculinities by heavy metal musicians. They are as follows: “Working To Pay My Beer” (DNA, 2015), “Motorocker, the Legend” (Stress, 2018), “The Warrior” (Roosevelt Bala, 2018), “Shadow Zone” (Thunderspell, 2015), “Metal Dictator” (Roosevelt Bala, 2020), “Beyond The Last Bend Of The River” (Rhegia, 2023), “We Avoid Life, We Cause Death” (Nuclear Inferno, 2021), “Social Hate” (Social Hate, 2021), “Silver Car” (Delinquents, 2021) and “Militia Family” (Petals Blade, 2021). I start from Masculinity Studies (BOLA, 2020; CONNELL, 2015, 2005, 1987; KUPERS, 2005; VIGOYA, 2018), Whiteness Studies (BENTO, 2022; DYER, 1997; CARDOSO, 2014; SCHUCMAN, 2020) Musical Scenes (JANOTTI JR, 2013, 2004; QUEIROZ, 2019, 2021; SILVA, 2018) and Media Studies (VAN DIJCK, 2019,2013), to better define the nuances of performed masculinities in these video clips. The concepts of gender as “performance”
and “order building process” (BUTLER, 2003; CONNELL, 1987), hegemonic masculinity (CONNELL, 2005), “hypermasculinity (KUPERS, 2005), protest masculinity (CONNELL, 2005), whiteness (CARDOSO, 2014; SCHUCMAN, 2020), heterosexuality (MOORE, 2009; SEGDWICK, 2007), homosociality (SEGDWICK, 2016; ROGERS; DEFLEM, 2022) class (MOORE, 2009; NILSSON, 2009; WEINSTEIN, 2009) and nationality (SENA, 2019) define it centrally. Methodologically, I will analyze the scripts of performed masculinities (AMARAL; SOARES, POLIVANOV, 2018; TAYLOR, 2013) in these clips through a media analysis (SOARES, 2013) that chooses the song, the musical genre and the performance as stages of its procedure. In addition, to expose the feasibility of understanding these male audioverbovisual forms as a network, a connected, multiple, heterogeneous and expanded material fabric, beyond the videocliptic emission/duration linked to the “MTV era” (GUTMANN, 2021). And, when mobilized, they generate cultural/identity flows equaled to affective engagements and identity alliances (GUTMANN, 2021). The concept fits the operations of these regimes of masculinities in the face of the “inextricable relationship between online platforms and societal structures”, so recurrent in our 21st century society: platformization (DIJCK, 2019). Because of this relationship, the idea of “connected listening” (JANOTTI JR, 2020), will serve to understand and map the reception of the consuming public of these cultural products, the issues of gender, sexuality, race, class and nationality embedded in their performances and, both they and those in the video clips, will have an intersectional look. The hypothesis is the verification of the broad control, in the scene’s networked audiovisual, of a performed hypermasculinity composed of socially regressive male traits, provocateurs of gender inequalities, conservative, authoritarian and intolerant political positions, aligned with the Bolsonarist extreme right. The doubts are: how do their social markers operate, defining their identities, masculinities and establishing this hegemonic masculinity regime? How do the representations of other bodies present and absent in the clips relate to these constructions? And, in what ways, do such relationships generate gender and racial inequalities and conservative political positions?
