SUMMARY:

Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in the world, accounting for about 1.35
fatalities per year, and thousands more injured. In addition to these, psychological disorders,
congestion, interruption of public transport and cargo transport, overload in emergency care,
compromised supply of people, are other consequences that are associated with these events.
Therefore, analyzing these occurrences is of fundamental importance to understand the
dynamics of these accidents and develop mitigating policies to reduce these accidents. Based on
this, this work proposes a model for spatiotemporal analysis of traffic accidents, to identify
critical accident points, understand the pattern of these occurrences over time and identify which
factors contribute to accidents, based on a set of historical accident data. The information
obtained from this research will be essential for the development of control measures. For this,
the study uses Kernel density, global and local spatial autocorrelation approaches for
spatiotemporal analysis of accidents, and thus, identify the spatiotemporal pattern. In addition,
the GWR will be applied to verify the impact of some factors on accident variation, and finally,
a multi-criteria decision model will be developed for ranking identified hotspots. As a result of
this research, it was identified the places where there is a higher density of accidents, and that
the spatial pattern of accidents varies with time. In addition, the Centro neighborhood was
identified as the precarious location, which should be prioritized in the actions of the traffic
authorities.
