SUMMARY:

Decisions are part of the daily lives of people, companies and organizations, and there are several conscious and unconscious aspects that can influence such decisions. Thus, neuroscience and its tools emerge as a powerful resource in the search for insights about internal and external factors to the decision-making process, also contributing to the improvement of multicriteria decision support methods. Because of this, the objective of this dissertation is to carry out a comparative study between the stages of the SAD Decision Support System associated with the FITradeoff method with calculation activities (cognitive effort) and music (more automatic responses), in order to acquire new knowledge about the relationships and similarities between the analyzed contexts. Therefore, an Electroencephalogram (EEG) was used to record the brain waves of 36 undergraduate and graduate students in production engineering at the Federal University of Pernambuco – UFPE, who each developed their own decision problem. All experiments were performed at the NSID laboratory (NeuroScience for Information and Decision Laboratory) and data were provided for this study, featuring a documentary research. For the analyses, the Theta frequency band, the Alpha Frontal Asymmetry and the Pope Engagement Index were used, and statistical evaluations of Test T, shift function and asymmetry were made, in order to compare the data blocks of this study in an analytical way and get information. Then, with the analysis, relevant information was found about the preference elicitation process with FITradeoff, thus enabling the acquisition of insights and recommendations for improvements to the system. Thus, in the first step considered (ordering the scale constants), a great similarity was observed between this and the music activities. In the analysis of the space exploration stage of consequences, inserted in the SAD for experimental purposes, little information was found, however, the need to increase the engagement of the Decision Maker during the execution of this stage is highlighted, since, in the analysis of the index of Pope engagement, this step obtained lower values than the others. Now, with regard to the third step, the flexible elicitation of FITradeoff, it was found with the results, that this step is closer in terms of brain activities, to calculation activities. This result suggests a state of greater cognitive effort during this stage, which is desirable, in order to generate responses from the decision maker, consistent with their real preferences. It is noteworthy, however, that in situations in which many questions are eventually asked by the SAD, greater support must be given to the Decision Maker, with a view to maintaining this
state and avoiding stress. Finally, it is important to highlight that the development of this research can contribute in a relevant way to studies in the area of multicriteria decision, conceiving valuable insights for the improvement of FITradeoff, being possible to expand the knowledge here to other contexts, showing that neuroscience can help indeed in the improvements of multicriteria methods.
