SUMMARY:

Many studies have been developed with the support of neuroscience tools to analyze behavioral aspects. However, there is a gap regarding the use of neuroscience in multi-criteria decision-making/aiding (MCDM/A). Motivated by this, the study aims to investigate the behavior of decision makers (DMs) during analysis in the holistic evaluation of the FITradeoff Decision Support System (DSS) through graphical and tabular visualization. For this, an exploratory study was conducted using data from three experiments and, with the aid of the Eye-Tracking tool, it was possible to capture data from the participants’ eye movements. Additionally, Area of Interest (AOI’s) designs were performed aiming to obtain metrics to investigate the decision maker's behavior in this decision process, such as Time to First Fixation - TFF, Fixation Duration - FD, Choice Prediction, and Pupilometric Analysis. The results indicated that the criteria viewed first tend to be the left-side criteria (criteria 1 and 2), and have the longest fixation duration, and the criteria viewed last tend to be the right-side criteria, i.e., viewing tends to follow in the left-side to right-side position, confirming that the distribution of weights from left-side to right-side position is adequate. The AOI data further indicated, via the Choice Prediction metric, that fixation duration has no downstream effect on the DMs preference for it, thus, other variables need to be analyzed as to their role in predicting the decision maker’s choice in future investigations. The results of the pupil dilation peak, suggest an increase in mental fatigue associated with the Selection task from the decrease in the pupil dilation peak in this stage and higher level of attention and engagement in the Elimination task. Moreover, for all combinations of criteria, the bar charts obtained higher mean pupil dilation values and a suggestion of a tendency of the employment of a higher level of attention for the analysis of visualizations with different weights, perhaps due to the greater difficulty when compared to equal weights. In view of the above, it was possible to observe usual behavior patterns for improving the analyst-decisor relationship, as well as to suggest further future investigations.
