SUMMARY:

The cattle meat industry is important because, in addition to contributing to the global economy, it provides the most widely consumed source of protein worldwide. Nevertheless, the meat production process has the potential to trigger climate change, contribute to plastic pollution, induce eutrophication, and lead to soil acidification. From a management perspective, few actions have been suggested to mitigate these negative impacts, creating a gap that needs to be addressed. Therefore, the main objective of this thesis is to enhance the cattle meat supply chain in order to become more environmentally sustainable by proposing decision and negotiation models that facilitate supplier selection and packaging procurement as managerial systematics designed to drive the strategic advancement of the meat industry. The first proposed model serves as a guide for categorizing suppliers. It uses the Value Focused Thinking (VFT) approach and Flexible and Interactive Tradeoff (FITradeoff) multicriteria method for sorting and suggests improvements and advancements in suppliers' operations in pursuit of sustainable development. The second model, in addition to selecting a single supplier using FITradeoff for selection, proposes an agent-based negotiation protocol. The model includes offer evaluation function, concession magnitude, and counteroffer functions for both agents, resulting in automated exchange of offers between the parties (buyer and seller). The third model proposes another negotiation process; however, this model differs from the former since it reduces a large number of negotiation packages while conducting the process of eliciting scale constants. The models were applied through case studies in a large-scale company located in the northern region of Colombia. The contribution of the proposed models stems from their emphasis on greening the cattle meat supply chain, through the implementation of strategic techniques and recommendations for suppliers aligned with sustainable development goals. In practice, it helps leaders and companies choose sustainable suppliers, providing suggestions to improve suppliers' performance in sustainable terms. It also contributes for reducing operational and microbiological contamination risks in meat supply chain, reducing public health problems caused by the consumption of spoiled meat; and, decreasing pollution caused by suppliers, resulting in a cleaner meat production system.
