SUMMARY:

The Pernambuco, Paraíba, and Natal Platform marginal basins are located in the eastern border of the Brazilian Atlantic margin. Evidences of post-rift tectonic reactivation have been systematically reported for their onshore sector and adjacent basement domains. However, the impacts of these tectonic events in the offshore regions are poorly studied. Reactivation processes present great importance for exploratory model of sedimentary basins, because they can create excellent structural traps and hydrocarbon migration pathways. This study presents an evaluation of the reactivation effects in these basins sedimentary infill based in the analyses of satellite imagery data, geophysical potential field data, and 2D seismic reflection data. The results also showed the relationship between the continental scale strike-slip shear zones, trending NE-SW and E-W, related to the adjacent basement, with the structural framework created by the Cretaceous rift, and the fracture zones in the oceanic domain. The investigation of 130 2D seismic sections allowed mapping the fault planes which formed due the reactivation of rift faults, and which affected the deposits of Cretaceous and Cenozoic-Recent interval in the cotinental platform region of these basins. The study also mapped the extension of the salt layer that occurs within the sedimentary succession of the Pernambuco Plateau, based on the salt tectonic related-features found. It allowed the description of structures like diapirs, salt pillows, salt sheets and salt teardrop. The descriptive-statistical analyses of the distribution of the post-rift faults revealed that the reactivation also affected the oceanic crust domain. The magnitude of the fault slips vertical components of reactivated faults showed that the Pre-Cambrian basement configuration controlled the intensity of the processes/deformation, which were dominated during the Cenozoic by a strike slip regime, with a maximum horizontal compressive stress trending E-W, and an extensional stress trending N-S. As occurred in the marginal basins of southeastern Brazil, the events of Cenozoic tectonic reactivation possibly influenced the eventual petroleum system which could exist in the studied marginal basins, producing traps and hydrocarbon migration pathways.
