PAGES: 101
BIG AREA: Engenharias
AREA: Engenharia Civil
SUMMARY:

Soils are the raw material of indispensable support for Civil Construction, however they can present problematics characteristics, such as expansive clays that when subjected to moisture variation expand or contract, forming cracks and causing instability problems in the structures. In this case, one of the most important parameters to be analyzed in the development of cracks in an expansive soil is the tensile strength. On the other hand, increasing industrialization results in increased environmental pollution, due to the production of waste, especially plastics such as Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), which are not biodegradable and often receive inadequate disposal. The use of PET materials by recycling programs is limited, being a sustainable option the incorporate them in civil construction through the reinforcement of expansive soils. Thus, this study uses fibers from PET, in percentages of 0,25%, 0,5%, 0,75%, 1% and 2% in dry mass, randomly distributed in the expansive soil of the city of Paulista-PE, aiming to improve its volumetric behavior, especially that of cracking, and increase its tensile strength. Two equipment were developed, one for direct tensile and the other for fracture toughness of soil samples, individually and reinforced. Squeeze-flow, “free” expansion, expansion stress, simple compression, diametral compression tensile, direct shear, permeability and cracking tests will also be carried out to evaluate the effect of fiber reinforcement on the hydromechanical aspects of the soil, as well the use of images of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of this experimental investigation will be analyzed and, based on the soil-fiber interaction, it is intended to analyze the benefits of reinforcement in the tensile strength and in the type of rupture behavior of the expansive soil, as well as the effectiveness in reduce the development of cracks.
