SUMMARY:

In December 2019, the alert of a pandemic spread across the world. The countries started their emergency plans with regard to the federal, state and municipal governments. According to Seung-Whee Rhee (2020), as of mid-May 2020, more than 4.5 million people have been confirmed to be infected with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and about 300,000 people have died from COVID-19 in the world. world. Most countries in the world were challenged to face the virus that spread quickly, and amid the lack of structure to contain the contagion. In Brazil, the challenge was no different, and it may be more relevant than in developed countries, due to existing differences in social classes and poor sanitary conditions. It is also considered that, unlike developed countries, Brazil has a deficit in selective collection, and although there is a separation of waste in some residences (condominiums), often the municipality does not have a sorting sector or associated recycling cooperatives to ensure the recycling of separated waste. ABRELPE (2020) reported that it is estimated that, during the period of health emergency, resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, and due to the quarantine, isolation and social distancing measures adopted, a relevant increase in the amount of generated from household solid waste (15-25%) and a very considerable growth in the generation of hospital waste in health care units (10 to 20 times). Considering also the existing difficulty in the adequate final destination of urban solid waste in sanitary landfills, the COVID-19 pandemic brought a greater challenge by increasing the risk of collection, sorting and final destination of waste that generate biological risks for both " garis” regarding waste sorting operators in recycling cooperatives, thus requiring a change in the behavior of the actions of all workers involved with COVID-19 waste. In this context, the present research aims to bring together national and international protocols on the necessary actions in the handling of waste in cooperatives, and a study is also applied in two municipalities in the state of Pernambuco.
