SUMMARY:

The uncontrolled emission of gases from landfills is a constant concern that reaches the local and global level, since the release of biogas into the atmosphere is one of the main factors contributing to the greenhouse effect. As a way to minimize environmental impacts, the application of technologies aims to improve waste disposal methods, ensure its reuse and reduce the amount of biomass deposited in landfills. In this context, the present work aims to present an alternative both for the reuse of waste from the use of açaí, the remains of pruning resulting from the maintenance activities of urban centers, and for the problem of fugitive emissions in landfills, a common factor in landfills that do not present efficient layers of coverage. Thus, biochar production was carried out with these biomasses that would be discarded for application in soil mixtures for use in landfill cover layers for biogas retention. To analyze the relevance of the theme and novelty in the application of biochar in layers of landfill cover, a bibliometric study on the subject was initially carried out over the years worldwide. In the practical and laboratory scope, biochar snare and wood residues were produced with the use of a aerator and the mixture of these biochar with soil was made in 3% of biochar in soil mass. The test program was performed by: physical characterization of natural soil samples and mixtures with biochar (granulometry, actual grain density, consistency limits); microstructural characterization of biochar (Microscopy and SEM) and geotechnical characterization of the natural soil of the mixtures (compaction, shear resistance, water and gas permeability and characteristic curve). The application of biochar to the soil led to an increase in the void index and consequently an increase in its porosity. This factor allowed the samples with biochar to present a higher water retention, with air permeability and water of in the order of 10-8 m/s. It was also found that biochar guaranteed the soil an increase in its water retention capacity favorable point for landfills, because there is a reduction in the occurrence of cracks in the cover layers and consequently reduction of fugitive emissions, a relevant factor mainly in landfills located in arid areas where there is low rainfall intensity. The insertion of biochar into the soil also provided an increase in the cohesion of the material, an important factor tied to soil resistance. In view of these preliminary results, the application of soil mixtures with biochar suggests an alternative for the resolution of these two urgent problems, the energy reuse of biomass and the control of fugitive emissions in landfills.
