SUMMARY:

Transport is essential for carrying out all activities that depend on travel, and can help with urban development and social inclusion. The motorcycle is a means of transport that is already consolidated in many countries, mainly in the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. The main challenge related to motorcycles concerns vulnerability to traffic accidents, while most opportunities are related to mobility, since many people who do not have access to another mode or live in peripheral areas without options to achieve desired opportunities, or the lack of efficient public transport systems. Motorcycles generate income as a working tool for cargo delivery and individual passenger transport. It has advantages over other modes, such as accessibility and speed, in addition to the low cost of acquiring and maintaining the motorcycle, and these advantages can outweigh the risks of this means of transport. Therefore, it is possible to perceive that several factors can influence motorcycle ownership and use, and it is important to study how users perceive this mode of transport. As the motorcycle generates income, access to work, study, health, shopping and leisure opportunities and takes people to destinations that other modes of transport are not possible, the motorcycle promotes urban development and social inclusion. Thus, the general objective of this thesis is to understand how the ownership and use of the motorcycle, as a mode of transport, expands the possibilities of access to the socioeconomic opportunities offered by the city, in different urban contexts. The hypothesis worked in this thesis is that factors such as income, place of residence, lack of choice or alternative to other modes of transport, acquisition and maintenance costs, in addition to the agility of the motorcycle, are the main attributes that lead users to use the motorcycle to carry out their daily commutes. These factors contribute to the intensification of travel for various reasons (reach of opportunities/activities) and also to new destinations, expanding the range of opportunities/activities. In order to reach the objective and the hypothesis raised, a field research will be carried out with a questionnaire prepared based on the literature, covering the main sociodemographic factors, related to the pattern of travel, related to the urban space, psychological factors, which influence the use and ownership of the motorcycle. . To analyze the results of the analysis of explanatory models using logistic regression was chosen to analyze motorcycle use and ownership and ordered logistic regression to analyze access to opportunities. The expected results are intended to analyze which factors are most relevant in different urban contexts and understand how the motorcycle leads to the social inclusion of people.
