SUMMARY:

Glycerol is a by-product generated in the production of biodiesel whose production has been growing annually, following the demand for biodiesel in the energy matrix. This residue can be biologically converted, via anaerobic fermentation, into several products of market interest, such as 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO), H 2 , ethanol, n-butanol, in addition to short-chain, and medium chain carboxylic acids. Thus, it is necessary to develop studies to promote the reuse of glycerol. The anaerobic fermentation of this substrate can be promoted by mixed cultures, whose robustness allows the facility to metabolize both pure and crude glycerol. In this work, the activity of a consortium of glycerol fermenting bacteria is being studied in continuous anaerobic reactors with biofilm adhered to a support medium, operating under different conditions of pH , HRT, and applied glycerol loading rates (gly-LR), using pure and crude glycerol as a source of carbon and establishing the optimal conditions to obtain 1,3-PDO and ethanol as the main fermentation products. From the experiments already developed in continuous reactors, maximum yields of 1,3-PDO of 0.47 and 0.62 mol.mol glycerol -1 were obtained, with gly-LR of 18.0 and 46.0 g.L -1 .d ‑1 of pure and crude glycerol, respectively. Ethanol yields from 0.20 to 0.30 mol.mol glycerol -1 were obtained with pure glycerol in continuous reactor with pH > 8. The results already obtained were very promising, especially with crude glycerol, for a large scale application. In addition to the studies in continuous reactors, batch tests were carried out to evaluate the influence of pH conditions and glycerol concentration on yields. Finally, the study also aims to characterize by DNA genetic sequencing, the microorganisms that acted in the glycerol fermentation in the operated continuous reactors.
