SUMMARY:

The increase in prolonged drought events in different parts of the world associated with increasing agricultural production and the proposal to reduce the mineral fertilizers used have led farmers to look for alternative sources of water and nutrients to support food production. In this aspect, the agricultural reuse of sewage treatment by-products has been highlighted in recent years. The presence of nutrients and organic matter essential to plants in treated sewage and sludges, especially nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), is one of the main advantages of the agricultural use of these by-products. Another relevant aspect is the increasing loss of nutrients from the soil, mostly caused by inadequate irrigation management, resulting in a decrease of nutrients in the food produced. In that scenario, biofortification appears as a complementary alternative to improve the nutritional quality of food by increasing the levels of micronutrients essential for a healthy human diet. Some works have been developed concerning the bean's biofortification, aiming to increase the potential of the beans to help reduce malnutrition. Therefore, the present project aims the use reclaimed water and biosolid in the cultivation of caupi bean (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) to improve the nutritional quality of the grains. The experiment will be carried out in a greenhouse in a fully randomized design, with ten treatments and five replications, totaling 50 planting units. The treatments will consist of combinations of irrigation with water supply (control) and treated domestic sewage (TDS), chemical fertilization (control) and fertilization with biosolid and treatments containing strains of the bacteria of the genus Rhizobium. At the end of the experiment, it is expected that irrigation with reclaimed water and organic fertilization will increase the grain yield, the micronutrient content of the grains, the nutrient content of the leaf tissue and that there will be no contamination of the grains with pathogenic microorganisms.
