SUMMARY:

The entire population must have the equal right of access to opportunities. Cities need to provide services that guarantee this right, and public policies are needed to that end. Transport plays an important social role as it is an instrument to meet everyone's travel needs. However, transport planning, especially the urban public transport system, has not included the assessment of this social issue. In this sense, the advancement of planning on the issue of equity of accessibility and mobility in public transport is necessary for the sustainable development of cities, especially in emerging countries. The purpose of this research is to develop measures that can assess equity from the point of view of accessibility and mobility of the urban public transport network from operational data of the system with socioeconomic and spatial information. Thus, the method will be applied to characterize the current scenario of the collective transport system in the municipality of João Pessoa and then direct improvements in the public transport network to serve the population more equitably. For this, transport system data in GTFS format (General Transit Feed Specification) combined with socioeconomic data will be used for the spatial analysis of the system and definition of accessibility and mobility measures. In this way, the inclusion of equity assessment in the public transport planning process can be done. This thesis project ends with the proposed methodology that will be developed and the strategies for advancing and completing the doctoral research.
