SUMMARY:

The uncontrolled emission of biogas, generated by solid waste, is a serious problem in the atmospheric atmosphere, both locally and globally and, consequently, its emission should be minimized. One way to minimize the impacts of biogas is not the environment through its reuse for energy generation. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the potential of methane gas generation from the biodegradation of organic waste from the municipalities that make up the landfill of the Regional Solid Waste Consortium of Agreste Alagoano (CONAGRESTE), through the Biochemical Potential of Methane and through mathematical models. The gravimetric composition of RSU in the municipality where the landfill was located had the highest rate of organic matter (46.93%), followed by flexible plastic (15.77%) and sanitary waste (11.97%). In smaller quantities are rubber (1.03%), wood (0.19%) and leather (0.17%). For this purpose, six 1L discontinuous hydraulic flow reactors were used, with a reaction volume of 400mL, three reactors with inoculum and three others with the organic fraction without inoculum. The greatest potential was observed in the reactors with inoculum, of 7926.31 mL, with peak production on the 10th day of operation, and also obtained the highest methane production rate of 1491.16 mL.h-1. The reactors without inoculum had lower potential and methane production rate, 1020.42mL and 28.40mL.h-1, their maximum production occurred on the 30th day of operation.
