SUMMARY:

Waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) includes everything from large and small household appliances, computer and information and telecommunication (IT) equipment to automatic distributors when they reach the end of their useful life. The management of WEEE is significantly more complex due to its unusual chemical composition and fast and increasing evolution and premature disposal. In the last few years, both developed and developing countries have been looking for solutions to deal with the problems caused by the growing flow of electronic waste (both in quantity and toxicity). In general, these solutions are based on reducing resource exploitation through the reuse, repair, or recycling of this waste.Given this, the challenge of WEEE management requires adequate tools to equalize the environmental, economic and social dimensions. In this sense, the life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) is an important tool to support decision-making and identifying appropriate management solutions for WEEE. In this context, the objective of this thesis is to develop a method for selecting the most sustainable scenario for recycling waste from electrical and electronic equipment, from a life cycle perspective. As expected results, there are: (i) Provide a systematic literature review on the main WEEE management models adopted in the world, considering the production of technical and scientific studies, with an emphasis on the hierarchy of solid waste management, in the economy circular and life cycle assessment; (ii) Estimate the production of WEEE in Brazil considering the existing projection models; and (iii) Develop a conceptual model for WEEE management based on the solid waste management hierarchy and Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) tools.
