SUMMARY:

Does the perception of the use of electoral technology affect voter confidence in
elections? This project aims to collect and understand voters' judgments about the use of
technology in the Brazilian electoral process. Even though e-voting has been a reality in
Brazil since the 2000s, the seventh wave of the World Values Survey shows that only 26% of
voters completely trust the electoral process. The objective of the present work is to analyze
the relationship between the use of technology and voters' confidence in the integrity of the
Brazilian electoral process based on an experimental approach in which the treatment
consisted of exposing a random part of the respondents to a survey to information about the
use of technologies in the electoral process in Brazil.. The hypotheses are that (H1)
Respondents in the treatment group have a higher level of confidence in the electoral process
when compared to respondents in the control group; (H2) Bolsonarists are more suspicious of
the electoral process than non-Bolsonarists; and (H3) Exposure to electoral technology can
help reduce Bolsonarists' distrust in the electoral process.
Methodologically, this project was operationalized through a survey experiment
funded by the Foundation for the Support of Science and Technology of Pernambuco
(FACEPE). Inserted in the literature on Electoral Technology and Electoral Integrity, this
project helps to provide more accurate data on the perception of the Brazilian voting system,
as well as contributing to providing more evidence of public opinion on the use of technology
in elections. The results do not allow us to assert that electoral technologies explain the
variation in trust.
