SUMMARY:

Poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL) is a biocompatible and thermoresponsive polymer, capable of exhibiting a transition from hydrophilic to hydrophobic behavior at a transition temperature close to physiological. However, its application possibilities are limited by its difficult processability in the molten state and its high fragility in the solid state. These characteristics can be changed through the use of additives or combination with other polymers, forming mixtures or copolymers. With this objective, the present work intends to study the properties and processability of PNVCL on three fronts of study: i) preparation of a polymeric mixture of PNVCL with poly(lactic acid) (PLA); ii) preparation of a PNVCL copolymer with polyurethane (PU); iii) additivation of PNVCL with glycerol. The physical and chemical characteristics of the materials produced were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetry (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermoresponsiveness of the compounds was verified by the cloud point method and through contact angle analysis in the polymeric films. The results obtained so far indicate the obtaining of PNVCL/PLA blends with immiscible characteristics and thermoresponsive properties, confirmation of the description of PNVCL and PU homopolymers and the prediction of processing in the melt state by extrusion and injection of PNVCL with glycerol, without changing thermoresponsivity.
