SUMMARY:

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) has great variability in composition and separation methods are essential to enable reuse. However, the incorporation of raw residue in concrete can negatively affect the properties. Recycled concrete aggregate (ARC) is one of the RCD components and offers high potential for incorporation in cementitious composites through dosage optimization strategies, combination with additions and treatment methods. The poor performance of ARC may be related to mortar and/or old cement paste adhered to the surface. Thus, some methods can be used to remove this material from the surface of the aggregate or improve the quality of this layer. This study aims to evaluate the behavior of concrete containing coarse aggregate of recycled concrete submitted to mechanical treatments. The methodology of the work is based on the manufacture of concrete with treated and untreated recycled aggregates, on the investigation of the adhesion mechanisms between the surface of the residue and the cementitious paste, the influence of the variables involved in the process and chemical safety in the manufacture. It is expected, with the development of the experimental program, to obtain advances in the improvement of the ARC and to potentiate the use of wastes in the construction industry.
