SUMMARY:

In recent decades, the increase in the retraction rate of scientific articles has triggered attention in Academia, mainly due to the complexity of the underlying implications, with interference in the flux of scientific advancement, in the investment agenda for Science, Technology, and Innovation, in the evaluation metrics of science and scientists, in public health, and the public's trust in science. The knowledge of the subject on several fronts of analysis has contributed to the implementation or optimization of processes for identifying fraud and correcting unintentional errors. In this context, retracted articles become significant devices for understanding problems related to integrity and misconduct in scientific research. Therefore, this thesis aims to characterize the profile and dynamics of retractions in Latin America and their implications. It is a cross-sectional and diachronic study, configured as descriptive research, based on methodological triangulation combining quantitative, qualitative, and interpretative approaches. The input corpora derive from six sources of information, and the time frame considers the first existing record until 2022. It is worth mentioning the fundamental support of the Center for Scientific Integrity through the transfer of the data set through a bilateral institutional agreement signed within the scope of this thesis. Additional surveys were done in four databases of known relevance in the scientific field: SciELO, Web of Science, Scopus, VHL-LILACS, and the search engine Google Scholar. A combination of consolidated analysis methods and techniques, such as bibliometrics and citation analysis, and complementarily altmetrics as an emerging and promising technique, is proposed. It seeks, therefore, in addition to contributing to the advancement of knowledge on the subject, to collaborate with the creation or consolidation of proactive and reactive measures of best practices in research funding agencies, to subsidize strategic policies for prevention and reaction to misconduct practices, whether at the level of educational and research institutions or journals, components of the fundamental core of science communication
