SUMMARY:

Regarding the many problems that the systematic use of false information has caused around the world, this research has the main goal of understanding disinformation as a political phenomenon related to capitalism. A materialist view of disinformation is applied, aiming to see it as a phenomenon of physical, cognitive and social manifestations, based on the views of Buckland (2017) and Dantas (2012) on the dimensions of information and on information as a work process, respectively; a theoretical framework is also outlined that aims to categorize types of disinformation based on concepts brought by Araújo (2021) and Miranda and Santos-D’Amorim (2021). Disinformation here is understood as a form of mass manipulation through the ideological diffusion of the ruling class over the working class, through the use of the ideological production of discursive genres by the superstructure, materialized in the form of ideological apparatuses of the State, based on Bakhtin’s theoretical philosophy of language, as well as Marxist writings on ideology. In this sense, the problems with disinformation occur under a post-truth cultural context, which is understood as a consequence of the advance of neoliberalism in various spheres of life, and which emerges from the establishment of an interregnum arising from a crisis of authority and hegemony of capitalism. In Brazil, the crisis takes on concrete contours from the Brazilian Protests in June of 2013, through the convergence between police violence, press coverage, social media and depoliticization. The radicalization of a Brazilian New Right-Wing is pointed out as a result of a process that dates back to the redemocratization in the 1980s, but which only gained strength after the doors of the crisis opened in June, with a well-organized far-right, making use of ideological production for manipulation, and a weakened left that is incapable of exerting proportional force. In this sense, informational education that aims to combat this disinformation must be carried out in a radical and revolutionary way, which aims to build the conditions for the emancipation of the working class; in this train of thoughts, the research tries to give a take on what is the role of librarians and information professionals in this process. In the end, possibilities for concrete actions are pointed out for this fight, as well as new theoretical research guidelines, in addition to pointing out the effects of the class struggle in Librarianship that prevent more effective actions from being taken by the category.
